It's a start.

So, it appears I have this talent.

I'm not sure why it has taken me twenty five years to take myself seriously, but better late than never I suppose. I have been the go to person for friends, coworkers and students for years when it comes to writing and editing, but it took the CEO of a major organization recently taking notice for me to wake up and smell the roses. (I now have even more time at my desk to look forward to.)

The problem is I am both a dreamer and a realist. Editing for Random House or the New York Times? The mental images are to die for. Traveling the world and writing for National Geographic? I'm there! But I'm actually not there, because besides being decent at all things English, I am also pretty decent at dishing out my own reality checks. Hence, while I regularly coach students through essays, review my friends' first novels and edit other people's newsletters, writing my own material has somehow escaped me.

While this blog is no move to Manhattan or interview for grad school, it is a step towards cultivating the small part of me that has not entirely given up on the use of my degree. The goal is to simply start writing again, and not for the sake of getting an "A" on a final exam or having heartfelt words to say about my students at upscale work events, but for my own professional development (and enjoyment). After all, I do have quite the assortment of things to say.

Enjoy.
